According to a brand new Gallup poll, nearly 20 percent of the U.S. workforce lacked adequate employment in January. This is a much higher number than indicated by official Department of Labor statistics, which put the number of underemployed at 16.5 percent. The Gallup numbers show that some 30 million Americans are underemployed and struggling to make ends meet for the long term with reduced resources and bleak job prospects.
This is why it is critical that Congress act now to extend unemployment insurance (UI) for millions until the end of 2010. On February 28, 2010, UI will end for one million workers and millions more will follow in a staggered sequence. As long as no new jobs are being created, this lifeline must be extended to families and communities across America. A temporary 15 day stop-gap measure, as is being discussed, will not be enough.

unemployment
My husband has been a union Plumber for many many years. He was laid off in August of 2009 due to lack of work. Unfortunately because he did not exhaust his regular unemployment benefits by Feb. 20, 2010. We can no longer receive any Unemployment Benefits. Our income for a family of four is now below $10,000. Our future holds repossessions, foreclosure and homelessness. I do not share this story alone, as I know hundreds of thousands are facing the same devastating effects of this horrible recession. What does congress suggest we do? I want them to look my 5 & 2 year old in the face and tell them what they are gonna do about this. I am tired of being anxious everyday watching the news and reading every newspaper article to see if any progress has been made or if there are any jobs out there. We need help and we need it now!!! Procrastinating is not the answer..It only slows us down....
Sincerely,
Scared mother in Ohio
Unemployment Insurance
Recently I learned my benefits will terminate in the latter part of March 2010. I have been out of work since Feb. 6, 2010. I am a Union electrician on the book at Local 481 in Indianapolis,Indiana. My position is #500 plus with over 600 out of work. My son recently had his appendix removed in late January and his medical bill was twice the cost of my older sons which was removed about two and a half years earlier. $20,000 plus versus $12,000 which my share is well over $3,000, tell me how too pay this with the shape that this country is in and the health care system and its spiraling costs where does it end. How can health care costs double in such a short time? Without the unemployment extension I will be unable to pay this bill. Also did I say I had my older son starting college last fall. When it rains it pours. This country needs to get its priorities straight and have all the individuals in Washington put aside their differences or be voted out. The people of this country need to unite and let their voices be heard and not have their heads stuck in the sand.
